A Quick Guide to Proper Elderly Care Home Design

Are you planning new construction or home renovation that is all age-appropriate? If you’re looking for ideas on how to make your home friendly for seniors, you can inquire at Senior Home Transitions or go to their Facebook page. The decoration should be friendly and comfortable for children and the elderly of your household.

Proper Lighting

lampYou don’t want the covering to be tainted by bad lighting. Lighting should be enough, but not glaring, as it interferes with the freedom of the elderly. Use long rocker-type light switches because they are convenient. It may be more expensive than a traditional switch, but it’s easier to use.

Night lights are useful once you want to move around at night, like going to the bathroom. Emergency lights are nice when there is a power outage; they should be placed in the stairwell, kitchen, and exit doors. Finally, add a good variety of windows to bring natural light into the home.

Bathroom Safety

Choose non-slip floor tiles. If you have a bath mat, buy the non-slip variety. The toilet bowl and seat should be about 17 inches high, as this is unlikely to be stressful on your knees and back. It’s not necessarily child-sized, and to remedy this issue you should add a non-slip step to help your child use the toilet. The bathroom entrance should open outward, not toward the toilet area. If someone falls and is near the door, it is still possible to get in and help. In the shower, a balanced pressure lever prevents possible burns. Consider establishing a hand shower in combination with a predesigned showerhead, as it is likely to be easier for people with confined movement.

Kitchen Design

The exemplary kitchen arrangement should be of the “kitchen triangle” type, connecting the effective range between the stove, refrigerator, and sink. The larger the triangles, the greater the walking distance. For older people, a larger triangle will reduce walking distances and be strenuous. A wall mount placed at a reasonable height will likely be easier to use without having to bend over, given the nature of the floor location. Make sure you have good lighting and place a chair near the entrance. This is useful if you want to put something inside at the exact moment you open the door.

Handrail Stairs

stickPut a handrail on both sides of the staircase and extend it past the first and last measurements. The step should also have a different color scheme or design to indicate the edge of each step. If you are building a new home, you may want to design the stairs with a slight rise.

Interior Styles

Be aware of the following layout style conditions that may affect older people; if you want to have carpeting or slides on your marble or tile floor, put a mat on it to prevent tripping and slipping. Therefore, you want to present a great color contrast in the foreground as well as the background. For example, a bath chair should contrast with the colors of the floor, a slope on the floor should have different colored tiles or flooring to indicate a fall, and chairs should be a different color so that the edge of the seat is more visible.
